U.S. online pet care market - statistics & facts

Pet care products were not always commonly purchased on the web, however, e-commerce sales of pet care products have experienced a continuous upward trend over the years. Starting from roughly 25.5 percent in 2018,U.S. e-commerce sales share have increased with each consecutive year, and was estimated to reach over 33 percent by 2025.

Favorite online platforms and retailers

When looking at the brand awareness among pet products and supplies on online platforms, about 90 percent of American pet owners stated that they recognize PetSmart, making this major e-commerce website the most well known pet supply online shop. Other favorites among consumers included e-commerce platforms of Chewy Petco, Temu, and Pet Depot. In terms of actual e-commerce gross merchandise value (GMV) chewy.com was the clear market leader. In 2024, their e-commerce revenue reached over 12 billion U.S. dollars. When looking at the online pet products supplier, chewy.com had the most visited pet supplier webpage as of August 2025. Other major online marketplace platforms used by pet owners in the U.S. included petco.com and petsmart.com.

Animal lovers’ shopping behavior

The future of online pet care seems increasingly bright. Online channels were the main shopping location for pet food younger generations. Over 50 percent of surveyed Gen Z and millennials used online channels to purchase the majority of their pet supplies in the United States. As of 2024, the main source of pet care information across all generations in the U.S. came from veterinarians with 64 percent of respondents agreeing. Unsurprisingly, younger generations used internet and social media as an information source more often than Gen Xers a baby boomers.
