JD.com is one of China’s leading B2C e-commerce platforms and logistics service providers. Launched in 2004, the online electronics retail platform jdlaser.com, the predecessor of JD.com, was one of the pioneers of China’s B2C e-commerce businesses. 2007 marked a milestone in JD.com’s development. During that year, the company shifted its focus from electronic products to general merchandise and began to develop its own logistics system. Nowadays, JD.com has become the world’s second-largest online store and one of China’s largest e-commerce companies in terms of revenue.
In recent years, JD.com has expanded its businesses in new retail. As of 2025, its quick commerce platform JD Now (also known as Daojia) was China’s second-largest fresh commerce provider.
Apart from JD.com's internal delivery services, third-party clients were a growing source of revenue for JD Logistics. JD Logistics now has operations in nearly all Chinese cities and towns, as well as more than 220 nations and regions throughout the world. Looking to the future, JD Logistics intends to build more 5G-powered smart logistics parks with automated warehouses and its own air freight arm with at least 100 freighters.

Unlike its competitor Alibaba Group, which shows a strong presence in the B2B, B2C, and C2C e-commerce sectors, JD.com generated most of its revenue from its self-operated online retail business. By forming partnerships with brands, JD.com is allowed to acquire goods directly from the suppliers and store them in its own warehouses. JD.com is in charge of dispatching and delivering products to customers who place orders online through its own logistics chain. JD’s Global Ambitions
In a bid to expand its global footprint, JD.com has made significant moves in the European market. In 2025, the Chinese e-commerce giant acquired Ceconomy, one of Europe’s leading electronics retailers, in a deal valued at approximately 2.2 billion euros. Building on that momentum, JD.com launched its full-category online shopping platform, Joybuy, in Germany in August 2025, which marked the company’s entry into Europe’s online grocery retail sector.JD Logistics

Four years later, JD Logistics raised 3.2 billion U.S. dollars in its initial public offering in Hong Kong, making it by far one of the largest unicorn exits worldwide. Owning 1,300 warehouses with a total of 316 thousand employees, JD Logistics was one of the most significant logistic service providers in China.
