Agri-food products with signs identifying quality and origin (SIQO) in France - statistics & facts
Agri-food products and their production methods are very diverse. Nowadays, these items are stamped with many signs, labels, and logos, which can sometimes confuse consumers. However, in reality, a very limited number of these signs are recognized and controlled by authorities and organizations. In France, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food oversees the system of quality and origin identification signs, while the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO), a public institution, supervises regulations on all products with an official sign of identification of quality and origin (SIQO), and protects these against usurpation and fraud. The main SIQO labels refer either to the geographical origin of the product (AOC, AOP/PDO; IGP), to superior quality criteria (Red Label), or a specific production method (AB - organic).
