FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) covers just about everything consumers use in their daily lives. It is a market of high demand. As of 2024, German consumers living in private households spent the most money on housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuel. While this has been the case for a long time, it is also significant amid higher energy costs and rising cost of living in general in Germany. Other leading expenditure categories included transport, food, beverages and tobacco, as well as leisure. Within private consumer spending, retail expenditure made up around 31 percent as of 2023.
