Supermarkets and hypermarkets in China - statistics & facts
In the two past decades, supermarkets and hypermarkets experienced immense success in China. Those spacious and well-organized stores replaced conventional wet markets and became the primary grocery shopping destination for Chinese consumers. At one point, over 33,000 supermarkets were scattered across the country. However, this number has significantly declined since 2017, challenged by the rise of e-commerce and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020.
