Tobacco industry in China - statistics & facts
As the world’s largest tobacco manufacturer, China produces more than two million metric tons of tobacco per year. The majority of China’s tobacco production serves its large domestic market. Currently, more than one out of four smokers in the world are Chinese. The country's annual cigarette sales volume amounted to over two trillion sticks, more than Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas combined. Tobacco use has been a pressing issue that threatens public health in the country. Therefore, the government has rolled out various policies to strengthen tobacco control over the past decade, which have gradually taken effect.
