The main aim of an advertising campaign is to grab consumer attention and American Eagle Outfitters have successfully managed to do so, albeit gathering polarized opinions. The company’s most recent ad for their denim collection starred U.S. actress Sydney Sweeney and included a play on words with “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans (genes)”. This garnered negative attention on social media platforms as many interpreted this double entendre as alluding to more “traditional” beauty standards and was deemed in bad form due to the current political environment in the United States. However, American Eagle has stood by its campaign, stating “[it] is and always was about the jeans.” Furthermore, many American consumers shared they had no issue with the ad campaign.
