From relatively humble beginnings as a DVD-by-mail service, Netflix has grown into one of the most used video streaming services in the world. Today, the company is capitalizing on its pioneering move to streaming back in 2007. Since this transition, Netflix’s revenue has grown by nearly 38 billion U.S. dollars. The number of Netflix subscribers has followed a similar trend, with the figure significantly increasing to over 300 million in late 2024. While this represents a notable achievement, the company grappled with market saturation and customer churn in its core territories in recent years.
Netflix’s largest markets
The United States and Canada have long been the most important markets for Netflix. However, as a result of a saturated SVOD industry with ever-increasing costs, the streaming provider has struggled to retain customers in this region and instead saw subscriber numbers grow elsewhere, namely in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). After introducing a lower-cost ad-supported tier and initiatives to curb account sharing between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, subscriber numbers recovered. Furthermore, a survey found that nearly half of new sign-ups on Netflix in the U.S. went to its “standard with ads” tier in the first months of 2025, more than double the share of subscriber additions in 2023. In terms of average revenue per paying customer, the North American countries also remain by far the most valuable for Netflix, generating 17.3 U.S. dollars in the fourth quarter of 2024. In contrast, the average revenue per user in EMEA grew to 11.1 U.S. dollars in the same time period.
Netflix’s benefits
Netflix competitors, such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and HBO Max, have also carved out significant spots for themselves within the streaming landscape. Yet, Netflix’s popularity is booming around the world, with forecasts suggesting that the streaming giant will remain the market leader in the upcoming years. One of the main differences between Netflix and its competitors is its massive wealth of original content. Worldwide, Netflix was estimated to increase its spending on own productions to 18.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2025. Indeed, the popularity of shows such as "Squid Game," "Stranger Things," and "Bridgerton" and movies such as “KPop Demon Hunters” have made original programming integral to the company’s continued success.
Despite being one of the very few direct-to-consumer businesses generating profits, Netflix, just like other DTC businesses, adopted new (content) strategies in order to stay competitive. It recently experienced theatrical releases by re-releasing "KPop Demon Hunters" and a premiere episode of "Stranger Things" in cinemas, aiming to reach a larger audience. Furthermore, while more than ever focusing on non-English content, acquired TV shows, and live programming such as the two NFL games at Christmas, Netflix also announced to intend to buy Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming and film business, which would make the streaming giant's library of IPs even bigger.
From the beginning, it was Netflix’s ability to adapt to changing technologies and consumer demands that made it so successful. This ability to adjust has continued in recent years with the success of its original content and increased focus on providing regional and live programming around the world. As long as Netflix can continue this trend of innovation while compensating for subscriber losses, the company will likely remain an important voice in both the streaming market and the entertainment industry as a whole.
