Cannabis in Uruguay – statistics & facts
In December 2013, Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize and regulate the production and consumption of cannabis. A decade down the line, the cannabis industry in the country directly employs around 900 people, with close to 50 licenses issued, and around 20,000 monthly pharmacy users. As of 2024, purchase of the product is only possible for registered citizens and residents aged 18 and older. Personal cultivation, cannabis clubs, and pharmacies are the three points of access available to users, all regulated according to corresponding laws.
